The prebiotic fibers
Chicory root inulin, 211 mg
Inulin is a chain of fructose units that human enzymes cannot break down. It reaches the colon intact, where it is one of the favourite foods of Bifidobacteria. In studies, inulin has been linked to more frequent bowel movements, a feeling of fullness and better blood sugar control in some groups, usually at doses of 3 to 12 grams a day. The amount here is much smaller, so its main job is to travel alongside the probiotic strains as a starter food.
Potato resistant starch, 100 mg
Resistant starch is starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine. Bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids, especially butyrate. Research on insulin sensitivity has used 15 to 30 grams a day, far more than a capsule can hold. You can add to it naturally with foods such as cooked-and-cooled potatoes or rice, oats, beans and slightly green bananas.
The probiotic blend, 36 mg
Bifidobacterium infantis
One of the first bacteria to settle in the human gut. Certain strains have been studied for bloating and irritable bowel symptoms, with mixed results. It is generally regarded as safe for healthy people.
Clostridium butyricum
A spore-forming bacterium that produces butyrate. One strain has been used in Japan for decades, mainly for diarrhoea linked to antibiotics. Because it forms spores, it survives stomach acid well. Rare bloodstream infections have been reported in seriously ill, immunocompromised patients, which is why that group should avoid probiotics unless a doctor agrees.
Akkermansia muciniphila
A bacterium that lives in the mucus layer of the gut. In a small 2019 human trial, people who took it daily for three months showed better insulin sensitivity and lower cholesterol than the placebo group, while the change in body weight was small and not statistically significant. It is promising, but the research is still early.
What the label does not tell you
The blend is listed by weight, not by the number of live organisms (CFU), and the specific strain codes are not given. That makes it hard to compare the dose with clinical studies. Keeping the bottle refrigerated, as the label asks, helps protect whatever live cultures are present.
